ConnectNOURISH is a student- and alumni-led community initiative connected to the broader ConnectSTEM research ecosystem.
Its work combines community service with continuing scientific inquiry around traditional beverages, food preparation, roasting conditions, and related questions in food chemistry.
ConnectNOURISH pathway
Service and Science, Connected
ConnectNOURISH’s community tea-distribution work and later scientific research are connected parts of a broader journey. What began as a practical effort to serve warm beverages to community gatherings grew into questions about preparation, efficiency, and the chemistry behind traditional drinks.
These activities developed alongside one another rather than from a single originating study. Community service raised practical questions; those questions opened directions for scientific follow-up; and the research, in turn, informed how the community work could be refined.
ConnectNOURISH is best understood as an ongoing relationship between service and inquiry — not as a single research paper that grew into an organization.
Questions Still Open
Students have continued investigating scientific questions related to traditional beverages and preparation methods. This includes analytical work involving roasting conditions and the chemical composition of roasted grain beverages.
One ongoing line of inquiry examines how roasting time affects the formation of flavor-related compounds in roasted grain tea. This work remains in progress and has not yet been published.
ConnectNOURISH reflects ConnectSTEM’s belief that research does not end with a single result — follow-up questions can keep extending the work, and community needs can keep shaping the questions researchers ask.
