
About ConnectSTEM
ConnectSTEM is a student research and mentorship ecosystem where students develop research questions, participate directly in the research process, analyze results, develop their own manuscript drafts, and extend their work into community impact and peer leadership.
Founded in 2022, ConnectSTEM supports students as they transform personal curiosity and real-world questions into original research. Through sustained mentorship, students develop original investigations, pursue publication and follow-up research, and explore how their findings can translate into meaningful applications, initiatives, and community impact.
Our work does not end when a paper is completed. As students gain experience, they have opportunities to become research mentors and leaders themselves—guiding younger researchers and creating a cycle in which today's researchers become tomorrow's mentors and research leaders.
Program participation fees support sustained mentorship, research training, feedback, and program operations. ConnectSTEM does not charge students per manuscript or per publication, and journal submission, acceptance, or publication is never guaranteed.
Mentors provide scientific, methodological, analytical, and revision guidance. Mentors do not write manuscripts on behalf of students, ConnectSTEM does not sell authorship or guarantee authorship placement, and editorial review, revision, acceptance, and rejection decisions are made independently by external journals.

How Students Grow Over Time
Students may remain involved across multiple years, progressing from guided research toward increasing independence, continued research, leadership, and mentorship. Participation alone is not the outcome — ConnectSTEM emphasizes sustained development in research independence, scientific reasoning, communication, persistence, and leadership.

Participation, Access & Research Beyond Publication
Built for Long-Term Research, Not One-Time Publications
ConnectSTEM is a student research and mentorship ecosystem designed for sustained student development. Students develop research questions, participate directly in research, analyze results, and develop their own manuscript drafts — supported through a longer process of research, follow-up investigation, scientific communication, leadership, and, when appropriate, real-world application. Program participation fees support this sustained mentorship; ConnectSTEM does not charge students per manuscript or per publication.
1. Fee-Supported, Not Pay-Per-Publication
No Per-Paper or Per-Publication Fees
ConnectSTEM does not charge students separately for each manuscript, research project, or publication.
A student’s participation fee does not increase simply because they pursue additional research projects or manuscripts. Students who demonstrate the initiative, readiness, and commitment to take on additional work may continue developing multiple projects within the program without a separate “per-paper” charge.
ConnectSTEM therefore operates differently from a transactional model in which a student pays for each individual research output.
Publication is never guaranteed. Manuscripts are subject to the independent processes and decisions of external journals and may move through submission, revision, resubmission, rejection, acceptance, or publication.

Research Takes Time
Meaningful Research Is Built Through Consistency
ConnectSTEM is not designed around rapid or guaranteed publication. Research takes time. Students must consistently participate in experimentation, data collection, analysis, scientific discussion, manuscript development, and revision before a project may be ready for submission.
For many sustained research projects, reaching manuscript submission may take approximately one year of consistent participation, although timelines vary substantially depending on the project, research progress, experimental results, and student involvement.
There is no guaranteed timeline to submission or publication.
Authorship Is Earned Through Contribution
Participation Does Not Automatically Create Authorship
Paying a participation fee does not purchase a place on a manuscript. Authorship is based on meaningful research contribution, continued participation, and involvement in the development of the work.
Students are expected to contribute substantially to the research process and manuscript development in order to qualify for authorship, consistent with the requirements of the journal to which the work is submitted.
Authorship is earned through contribution — not purchased through participation.
If a Student Leaves a Project
Earlier Participation Does Not Guarantee Retained Authorship
A student who leaves a project before making sufficient contributions to qualify for authorship is not automatically retained as an author simply because they previously participated in the project.
When appropriate, meaningful earlier contributions may instead be recognized in an acknowledgement, subject to the contribution involved and the policies of the journal. Acknowledgement is not automatic, and ConnectSTEM cannot override a journal’s authorship requirements.

Research Leadership Is Earned, Not Automatic
Research leadership is also earned rather than automatically granted. Students may take on increasing responsibility only after demonstrating sufficient research ability, consistency, initiative, and readiness to guide others.
Time in the program alone does not guarantee a project-leadership title.
2. Long-Term by Design
Students Often Stay for Years, Not Months
ConnectSTEM is designed to support long-term intellectual development rather than a one-project experience.
Based on ConnectSTEM internal participation records, more than 70% of ConnectSTEM students continue with the program for at least two years. Retention is measured from students with sufficient enrollment history to reach the two-year milestone.

3. Need-Based Access
Research Opportunities Should Not Depend Only on a Family’s Ability to Pay
ConnectSTEM provides substantial need-based financial assistance to students and families experiencing significant financial hardship.
Depending on individual circumstances and available program resources, assistance may include substantial tuition reductions, discounts of up to 80%, or full fee waivers.
Circumstances considered may include:
- •low household income
- •single-parent households
- •serious illness or loss of family income
- •significant changes in family financial circumstances
- •other forms of documented financial hardship
ConnectSTEM may also provide full fee waivers in selected circumstances where a family's financial or personal situation would otherwise make participation difficult.
Financial assistance is reviewed individually and is not automatic. Eligibility depends on each applicant’s circumstances and available program resources.
4. Community Reinvestment
Program Resources Help Support Opportunities Beyond Paying Participants
ConnectSTEM program resources support more than individual manuscript development.
A portion of ConnectSTEM resources is reinvested into educational, research, and community initiatives within the broader ecosystem. This includes support for free educational programs such as EMET-STEM, student- and alumni-led service initiatives, and organizations that extend research into education, outreach, and community impact.
ConnectSTEM also provides resources and support to selected nonprofit and community initiatives connected to its students and alumni.
ConnectSTEM is a fee-supported program. A portion of program resources is reinvested into the broader ecosystem; not all program revenue is donated, and no specific percentage of revenue donated is stated unless supported by documented financial records.
Research Beyond Publication
Some Research Should Not End With a Paper
When student research identifies a problem that can be meaningfully addressed through continued investigation, education, outreach, or community service, ConnectSTEM helps students explore what the next step should be.
For selected projects, this can include guidance and infrastructure for developing a student-led initiative or organization, building educational programs, creating leadership and volunteer structures, developing public-facing educational resources and websites, connecting research with community needs, and preparing students or alumni to continue the work over time.
ConnectSTEM does not sell organizations, leadership titles, or nonprofit credentials.
Organizations and initiatives are not created simply to add an extracurricular activity to a student’s résumé. They develop when a research question creates a genuine reason for the work to continue beyond publication.
Not every research project needs to become an organization. Some questions appropriately end with a paper. Others lead to follow-up research, external collaboration, scientific presentation, community education, or a student-led initiative.

Research involving drierite and scientific experimentation helped inspire the development of STEAM Labs International, where ConnectSTEM students and alumni expanded hands-on STEM learning into educational outreach. How ConnectSTEM Defines Success
ConnectSTEM does not measure student success solely by the number of publications produced.
Research outcomes vary by student and project. Some students publish, some continue through revisions or follow-up research, some collaborate with external researchers, and some translate their work into education, service, or leadership.
Our goal is to help students take their research as far as their curiosity, effort, and the problem itself reasonably require.
WHY WE STAY FOCUSED
ConnectSTEM intentionally maintains a focused community of approximately 80–100 active student researchers at a time, allowing us to preserve the depth, continuity, and quality of long-term research mentorship.
We seek students who demonstrate intellectual curiosity, commitment, and the willingness to pursue challenging questions over time.

Beyond High School
Mentorship That Continues Beyond Graduation
Our relationship with students does not necessarily end when high school does.
Many ConnectSTEM alumni continue into pre-medical, biomedical, chemistry, and other science-related fields in college. As they encounter challenging foundational courses such as organic chemistry, ConnectSTEM continues to provide academic mentorship through concept review, scientific reasoning, problem solving, data interpretation, and guidance on laboratory-report development.
This continued academic support helps alumni navigate the transition from high school research to college-level science while remaining connected to the research community in which they developed.
Over time, many alumni return to contribute again—as research mentors, instructors, program managers, and organizational leaders supporting the next generation of students.
